| Precautions |
Renal impairment (avoid if severe); it should be used
with caution in renal disorders as it releases aluminium that can
easily accumulate; pregnancy and breastfeeding; Bezoar formation (hence
it must be used with caution in seriously ill patients) especially
those receiving concomitant enteral feeds or those with predisposing
conditions such as delayed gastric emptying |
| Side Effects |
Constipation is the commonest side effect, rarely
diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion, gastric discomfort, dry mouth, rash,
hypersensitivity, back pain, dizziness, headache vertigo, and
drowsiness |
| Dosage |
The absorption of strontium ranelate is reduced by
food, milk and derivative products and therefore, it should be
administered in-between meals. Given the slow absorption, strontium
ranelate should be taken at bedtime, preferably at least two hours
after eating. Patients treated with strontium ranelate should receive
vitamin D and calcium supplements if dietary intake is inadequate |

Sucralfate is a complex of aluminium hydroxide and
sulfated sucrose that appears to act by protecting the mucosa from
acid-pepsin attack. It binds to the HCl in the stomach and acts like an
acid buffer
